Flash back to the summer of 2018: A fabulous concrete and mosaic workshop with the inhabitants of Winthrop Court Community House! The workshop was an opportunity for the inhabitants of the surrounding housing, who normally would not have access to the materials and instruction to learn some new techniques with industrial materials as well as beautifying their neighbourhood.
During the Community Pieces project my fellow artist Christine Mockett and I worked with participants to create a garden featuring concrete sculptures, hypertufa pots, and mosaics. The students learned skills like mold making, concrete mixing and cutting stain glass. It was great to spend the summer outdoors getting dirty and building things but also to learn about the talent and skills already present in the community.
Below: An array of hypertufa pots built with the magic ingredients of vermiculite, peat moss and Portland cement.

My impression of Rosie-the Riveter.
First Nations Sculptor Raven was one of our participants.

There's nothing like making mud-pies again! Actually that's a cement bird-bath using sand and a large leaf as a mold.
A big thank you to Debra Margo for her landscaping and gardening skills and to the Ontario Arts Council for Funding the project.
