> The Conversation Umbrellas

In the first year of my Master's in Art Education I took a course entitled "Life History Research". It involved the intense research into one other student's experiences. We conducted interviews and collaborated on "Arts Based History" projects.

My partner Renee and I interviewed each other on the patio of Cafe Santropol. We asked each other questions about our art, what we believe the role of an artist is in society, as well as questions about our respective educations and how we felt they had shaped us. When it started to rain Renee pulled out her umbrella and the interview continued.

In my mind, the Umbrella immediately became a symbol of the social and intellectual space created during the course of the interview. The Umbrella would become the site for our final "Arts Based" presentation.
